How the game was played then. Some of those were likely busted hit & runs.

As a sport matures, as the talent pool of the sport increases, wouldn't the distribution of results tighten?

I haven't dug into it but, what's strikes me as odd as I glance at the charts is that Babe Ruth isn't anywhere to be found ... or Gehrig for that matter.

Right-handed. They were lefties.

Eh. Who knows if Hornsby was better than Nap Lajoie or Honus Wagner. How meaningful was the Dead Ball Era? This stuff from long before anyone alive could have seen it is... I dunno, but I'm not willing to make definitive pronouncements on it.

Who's the best POST-WAR right handed hitter?
-
Mays or Trout.

I have always said that Mays was the greatest baseball player I ever saw. Your charts make a compelling case for Hornsby being the greatest "right-hand hitter".
-
Mays had a better career, because he lasted a lot longer. Arguable which was better in their primes, since Hornsby played 2B but not nearly as well as Willie played CF. Also Mays missed 2 years in the Army.
