Because he actually realizes he is way too old.

Yeah. But he's only 3 years older than Bernie.

      A) Three years, at that age, is a lot; B) That’s why I wrote “actually” (and the same applies to Biden too).

Frankly, any candidate over 70 should have a very heavy burden to justify their fitness to do the job.

I agree, it’s a brutal job. And, given their shorter life expectancy, men especially. Biden so reminds me of Dole in ‘96–an elderly member of The Club who waited for his turn. Except Dole was a lot funnier.

Then again, it's 23 years later & Dole is still with us.

True. But the general rule is sound even when somebody best the odds. And it’s not just mortality. The job (typically) requires focus, mental and physical stamina, strong cognitive skills. Good reasons not to push the limits too much.

Yes. Reagan was unusual in his physical stamina, & even Reagan & Ike faded a bit in their second terms. Trump is a bit of an exception only in that his presidency works best when he is least personally engaged. Which is no way to run a railroad.

It’s difficult to know quite what is up with Trump. If you believe what you read, like it or not, he doesn’t work very hard. Watching daytime tv and playing golf with a cart (even on greens) are behaviors we associate with elderly people. It’s also hard to separate Trump’s

decline phase with what came before it. He’s obviously been stupefyingly ignorant for years. Being in his seventies didn’t trigger his incuriosity about public policy or his lack of any historical knowledge. But some people do say he was more articulate 20+ years ago.

He was clearly a sharper guy more able to sweat details in the 70s & 80s, or he'd never have accomplished the things he did in Manhattan real estate, like the Wollman Rink project. But that was a long time ago. But again, I want the minimum Trump in the Trump Administration.

I have had people tell me that, back in the day, he was sharp re the specifics of a deal. But he was also massively incompetent—the bankruptcies, failed projects etc. Add the tremendous support from dad and he was wildly overestimated. But that doesn’t mean he want a “better”

version of his awful self at 50 than today. The trouble is he is testing the entire theory of how incredibly unfit a president can be in the modern era. Part of that unfitness is the quality of mind and temperament linked—his erratic behavior is a product of both.
