Robert Byrd was not some obscure backbencher. He was the Senate Majority Leader. He was either the #1 or #2 Democrat in the Senate for 18 years, voted such by his peers. Without him, there's no Obamacare. But Ted Kennedy ended up having much more influence on the party agenda.https://twitter.com/PatrickRuffini/status/1141729597324767238 …

Any Democratic member of the Senate serving in 2010 or before worked with and served in the same caucus as Robert Byrd. In fact, he was even elected their leader. He was first elected whip after the Democratic caucus rejected Ted Kennedy.

I remember when the Democrats picked Robert Byrd to give their response to the State of the Union (during the Reagan years). It was not a good decision.

So, during discussions of segregationists, Klansmen, and other racists in the Senate, which cable news talking nitwit will be the first to identify Robert C. Byrd as a Republican? Or has this already happened and I missed it?

Byrd was also President pro tem of the Senate, putting him in the Presidential line of succession.

Democrats like to forget that for many decades their Senate leadership was a womanizing drunk who killed a woman in a car accident and a former member of the KKK.

Dennis Hastert was not some obscure backbencher. He served in the House for 10 terms and was the Republican party whip for 4 years and Speaker for 8. He served 13 months under a plea, for felony fraud charges related to his serial molestation of boys as young as 14.

I once had a liberal friend who was shocked when he saw old footage of Byrd talking about MLK in a way that wasn't exactly complimentary. Unlike other politicians of the era, he did evolve in his views in race. But the history remains...

... it is however something to consider, that while the segregationist pols of yesteryear may be gone from the earth, there are still many current office holders who have worked with them. The 1960s aren't that long ago.
