For his time and place, Thomas Jefferson was on the cutting edge of progress. More so, in all likelihood, than you are. Taking a stand against him may seem like taking a stand against racism, but in context, it's actually taking a stand for the divine right of kings.

Jefferson is complicated, partly because he was a hypocrite about this & nearly everything else (he knew slavery was wrong, but shrunk from followup), partly because the Hemings relationship was inherently coercive. He did, however, lead multiple concrete steps against slavery.

The most important and least appreciated is probably banning the importation of slaves, which eliminated the North's economic interest in slavery.

Yes. Though it also benefited him personally. But he also wrote the original federal ban on slavery in the territories, from which the language of the 13th Amendment is drawn.
