In many cases, this is exactly backwards. Bush picking Miers undermined confidence in establishment conservatives keeping their conservative promises, paving the way for someone like Trump.https://twitter.com/baseballcrank/status/1137480246293409793 …

When Bush selected Miers he showed many conservatives that it was *he* who was unqualified. Bush represented the elite GOP, hostile to WWC voters on immigration, trade, entitlements....and then then not even fulfilling promise on judges.

And yet the elite/populist divide was on full display in the Miers fight, with her *critics* frequently accused of an excess of elitism. The FedSoc types (like me) were ecstatic when we got Alito, long credentialed in the movement, instead.

In 2005 I had a bumpersticker on my car: “I Can’t Get Enough: Bush 2008.” I tore it off the day he picked Miers. So far, I prefer Trump to Bush. And I was a political at Bush’s Treasury.
