Everybody knows the team's are overpaying these guys, just as everybody knows the slope of age-related decline. This is what happens when you chase the statistical outlier instead of investing in the mean.
I do think the teams took some time to catch up to the fact that hitters age a lot faster now than they did a decade ago, due partly to less PED use, partly to the accelerated use of harder-throwing relievers.
