But it is damaging that people like most GOP leaders, essentially talk like free-market fundamentalists, and so frequently reject ideas on those grounds, but -- as you point out -- do not actually run things as that would imply.

The problem is the endemic failure to live up to promises, although of course the deeper problem is not setting the promises, in the first instance, by reference to what you can and will do.

This is the thing - to be libertarian in mindset here doesn't mean to want to shrink government, although it can. It means placing faith in the owners of capital and eschewing any meaningful intervention to help people. Trump won because he broke with that orthodoxy.

At this point, you're making an argument that is pretty far removed from libertarianism, the essence of which is small - or at least smaller - government. The Chamber of Commerce, for example, is pro-business but not libertarian.
