While I can all but guarantee that my 5th grade teacher would’ve bestowed such an honor on yours truly, you are correct. Who thought perpetuating shame among young children was a good idea?

When my son was in 3rd grade he had an autistic boy with extreme behavioral issues in his class. He had his own aide. The aide was a friend. The class was hand-picked to be with that child. You have no idea what the parents went through.

Sadly, I was upset about the classroom disturbances at first. This is a child with autism and extreme behavioral issues. The only break the parents had was when he was at school. The parents have to deal with that for life. They have my sympathy.

As the parent of two autistic boys all I can say is I don’t know how much money from the district it would take to make things right, but we’re going to find out. And then we’re going to add a few zeros just to be sure.
