Bush's domestic agenda always had aspects that were controversial on the Right, but the reality of 2001-05 is that a lot of the criticism was muted because of the focus on war. The result was a lot of suppressed frustrations that came roaring back later.

Exactly. High approval within party? Sure. "Obsessive, zealous fans"? Cmon. By that standard, Chris, couldn't you say that about most presidents?

I think you guys are memory-holeing a whole lot of rhetoric about the guy, who, above all else, triggered the libs and was fighting a war for civilization’s survival and was thus great.

My question is whether you're memory-holing every other administration. Here's Obama:pic.twitter.com/RCy7YxEJKS

Oh you could absolutely say the same about Obama and liberals and that would be fair.

What I'm saying is, it's normal in the modern era. I don't think anyone is memory-holing support for Bush, but you're overestimating enthusiasm among conservatives, who complained about the war, No Child, 'compassionate conservatism,' Miers, etc.

I guess I’m saying people are retrospectively elevating those (genuine) dissents now, as a means of not grappling with the fact that the cultural political role Bush played is/was very similar to the one Trumps plays now.

Does the Right even bother to defend W's legacy? I am genuinely curious whether there is a single conservative who argues that he was a great president. They seem to just avoid the topic entirely.

I think it is a serious flaw of our side that we just tend to abandon the past and let liberals rewrite it. "Great president" is not what I argued then, & wouldn't today. But I would certainly defend many of the things he did.

Dan takes the long way to around, only to end up proving Chris’ original point.
