One thing I find fascinating about the intra-right debate is that more or less everyone now pretends they weren’t all obsessive, devoted, zealous fans of George W Bush, which by and large they were, at least until he became very unpopular.

Exactly. High approval within party? Sure. "Obsessive, zealous fans"? Cmon. By that standard, Chris, couldn't you say that about most presidents?
-
I think you guys are memory-holeing a whole lot of rhetoric about the guy, who, above all else, triggered the libs and was fighting a war for civilization’s survival and was thus great.

Right but the public performance was relentlessly, unsparingly vicious towards the wars opponents and critics, and Bush was a totem of rightness and resoluteness

A war Democrats were happy to vote us into so they could flip on a dime one month in (with zero accountability.) We're supposed to feel bad about having Bush's back after that travesty?

“We never liked [blank] because we knew all along he was horrible, we just acted like it and falsely attacked all his opponents” is a useful dodge we can keep running until someone stops it.

I suspect the same is true of Trump, but replace war with the economy. As long as the economy is crusing along, people overlook a lot. If the economy hits serious road bumps in the next year, things could change very quickly.

The “frustrations” with W were all muted “I don’t agree with his tarrifs, but it’s indisputable he is the greatest president of our lifetime”

This just isn’t true. Other than his move to put his friend Harriet Miers in the Supreme Court, his agenda was hugely popular with Republicans/Conservatives.

Depends who you mean. Movement conservatives never liked Part D or NCLB. A big grassroots faction never liked his moderation on immigration.
