Pet peeve: people who pronounce the word banal as "BANE-el." I don't care if there are multiple acceptable pronunciations, it's "buh-NAHL" or bust, dammit.

I'm one of those terrible toffs who says "HARRIS-ment" instead of "huh-RASS-ment," fwiw.

I can only guess how many words I have and still do pronounce incorrectly bc I’ve only read it and not heard it.

I suffer tremendously at the hands of my more cultured wife because I'm book taught. On the other hand, I get to flash a wide grin every time she asks how to spell something.

I say BANE-ul and will continue doing so. I don’t know how I got in the habit, but I like it because it sounds more like an English word and less like a French one.

I learned the word in HS from a social studies teacher who used to give us 2 vocab words every day. And he pronounced it with a long a and emphasis on the first syllable. So that’s how I’ve done it ever since.

I pronounced cache as “cash-eh” in my head for years because it’s a word I only encountered in books.
