Basically true—But conservatives often label such media people “liberal” when, eg, economic issues, they are not particularly liberal at all.

That's partly true. A lot of what the Left calls "neoliberal" is center-left on economic issues & quite liberal on size-of-government issues.

That seems right but then the polling would show more than 1% stating “abortion” as the top reason for their voting preference.

Too many are being sold on the pie in the sky promises of a large federal government.

I think the GOP knows that too. They’re not stupid. They know there’s people like me who would consider more options if it weren’t for abortion weighing on me. I kind of think we’ll never see 100% success on that because then we won’t “need” them anymore.

1. There's a reason why Mitt Romney got smoked. The number one thing that hurts R's are the stereotype of being "the party of the rich" or specifically the party of the "CEO that lays you off" That's finally starting to waiver some with the rise of Silicon Valley robber barons.

2. NAFTA was a big killer here in the rust belt. After Perot took the Reagan Democrats away, R's were struggling. Trump got a lot of them back and even won D suburbs (Burton, Parma, Wyandotte) although his style hurts some in the affluent suburbs (Bloomfields) due to his style.

3. What the R's need to do, is be the party of the working and middle classes, as well as the party of manufacturing things here at home. People want a good job and to take care of their family and have a fair shake. Silicon Valley isn't our friend.

What I wonder is why do so few people list “abortion” as the “top issue” for them in polls, when we “know” that abortion is such a key partisan issue? It’s like 1% in most polls.
-
Because it's not the top issue for most and it gets bundled into the shares my "values" packet for most people
