Did people miss, or did teams think he was going to college? That happens fairly often, right?

That does happen. Mets got Roger Clemens in the 12th round in 1981, but couldn't sign him.

Looking back, Dunston was considered a clear #1 on talent/athleticism. I don’t remember Schmidt. SD mgt took grief for years for drafting Jimmy Jones ahead of Gooden. Spike Owen was a college star at Texas. And then at #7 overall....Slammin’ Sammy Khalifa!!pic.twitter.com/iCId87yVDb

Dunston had tremendous tools, high school hitters are harder to project than pitchers with Gooden's stuff who are all but MLB ready. I can get the difficulty of picking a pitcher over the kind of talent Dunston appeared to be.

@DocGooden16 didn’t even have the best arm in the 1st round - that belonged to Shawn Dunston -
Dunston didn't have the career projected for him - though 18 years in the bigs is nothing to sneeze at - but I can't blame anyone for taking a super-talented position player over a super-talented pitcher when both are 18-19 years old. And man did he have the tools.

At the time, it is impossible to know. Look where Clemens was drafted.

A hand full of Mets minor league coaches went to see Gooden pitch in a HS game during spring training that year. One of them - Eddie Toledo - came back to Payson complex the next day and was demonstrative and emphatic in saying that Gooden had been the best pitching prospect (1)

(2) ....he'd ever seen. Scouting director Joe McIlvaine was with them. I recall Joe saying that they couldn't believe he was still there when the Mets picked 5th w few months later.

I can believe that.
