20th century American liberals rejected aspects of classical liberalism as outdated, but they still saw the John Stuart Mill tradition as containing crucial safeguards for their vision of the individual good. Progressivism does not.

The debate on the Right is largely a reaction to that shift, and an internal argument about whether to retaliate in kind vs whether to embrace the classical liberal traditon as more urgently needed now than ever.

One easy proxy for this divide is to look at things like advertiser boycotts & social media rage mobs. Should the Right make the Left live under its own rules, or should we reject those tactics as both bad for society & ultimately unwinnable for the Right?

what if both are wrong? The premise that its left vs right is flawed. Both parties have veered extreme voiding compromise and the moderate middle.

Thanks to both GOP and Dem gerrymandered districts, compromise and the moderate middle get you a primary challenge from someone on the bluer left or redder right. If more middle folks would pick a primary, general elections would yield better choices.
