Ripken had played a fair amount of SS in the minors & 1981, splitting time between 3B & SS, but made a lot of errors & was seen by MLB types as too big to play short in the bigs, to the point where the Orioles traded Doug DeCinces to make room for Ripken at 3B.

Earl moved Ripken to short on July 1; he'd start every game there the rest of the season, & after 1982 he wouldn't play another position until 1996.
