Fingolfin's duel with Morgoth is also vividly written, & I thought of its imagery when watching Thanos fight Captain America in Endgame:pic.twitter.com/wjmCeKUjp4
That reaction is VERY common. It’s been the default initial review pretty much since The Silmarillion was published. And the thing is, even Christopher Tolkien kind-of agrees with it. Most of the stories were heavily truncated to fit within a single volume/narrative.
You can get the fuller version of most of them (particularly the “three great tales”) in later volumes, and IYAM it’s well worth the effort, but it IS an effort. CJRT never again tried to fill out the gaps between the decades-separated drafts, he just presented them w/comments.
I didn't read it until my early teens but it was natural for me because I grew up with so much biblical education so it seemed natural. I can certainly understand the barrier for most people though
I happen to be re-reading it again right now. It definitely reads more like a history text than a novel, a product of the editing process I would think. Still, as you say, some of Tolkien's best work is included.
Hands down my favorite book. I love its creation myth and stories of the struggle between good and evil. But it is not for the casual reader and tackling it without an atlas or Tolkien wiki is rough.
Also the stories of Numenor and its corruption by Sauron are chilling. How quickly a magnificent civilization succumbed to flattery and pride to their destruction.
I agree completely. I had a lot of trouble getting through it, but then I listened to the audiobook, and then, after having done that, I was able to finally read it later, and was very worthwhile.
