I mean, people are imperfect. It’s why peer review is so beneficial. But I mean even with the best system, there is stuff that if you misinterpret it, it’s not going to get caught because no one who reads it will know the details well enough to catch on.

there's imperfect then there's incompetence. If you try to write about a field by reviewing specialized 150 year old documents and just assume you understand their meaning, this is an inevitable error.

Something to be said for this impulse. Yet shrugs should not be be the default response to sloppy work. It's frustrating to read mere articles that botch law or tech issues. Often it's because people write from their biases. Bias is one of the "various issues" not to be excused.
