Rex Tillerson would have been an excellent choice for an ambassadorship or a role like Commerce Secretary or Trade Rep. He was - in retrospect, but not that surprisingly given his background - over his head trying to manage the multiple challenges of running State.
Fair, and I went back and forth on Tillerson; I was never a booster for nominating him, I liked his private sector resume & favored confirming him to give him a chance, but because he was a cipher I was not that surprised he ultimately failed.

The larger point is that Trump’s success or failure with any of his appointments is arbitrary and coincidental. He’s an unstable ignoramus. He thought Janet Yemen was too short to be Fed Chair. He appts. people he sees on tv. It’s not overpromotion—it’s an idiot throwing darts.

Well, that was largely why I wasn't focused as much on Tillerson per se at the time. That said, Pompeo has been obviously more successful at the job, & that's unsurprising given that he came with more directly relevant govt/natsec experience.
