They're terrible. As well as the two to three episode arc of a main character being near death if television writing is on the table.

I did like the way a dream was used in the Newhart finale though.

It worked because it was a parody. St. Elsewhere’s use was just bizarre, and Dallas’s was to fix a mistake of killing off a popular character.
