The political incentives for either party to cooperate when out of office have been dwindling for years, but it's a two-way street: you'll never get bipartisan cooperation unless you offer the other side deals they can live with http://baseballcrank.com/archives2/2012/10/politics_barack_9.php …https://twitter.com/sahilkapur/status/1128328717191786496 …

That only works though if your base will turn out at historic levels. Only Obama has ever been able to make that happen. Every previous Democratic winner(and all the losers of course) failed to achieve that. The winners won with swing voters.

When voter turnout is so low you can get as many if not more votes by energizing the base as you can playing to the middle, why not.

Trump has been more conciliatory than his GOP predecessors because he's not a politician wedded to a party or a diehard ideologue. He's very reasonable. Exhibit A: FIRST STEP ACT, landmark bipartisan prison reform.

Wait, what? 2d term Obama did absolutely nothing for his base. Its all right wing lie. He refused to do the hard work and at least have Democratic Senate act on immigration reform, any reforom- Then Dem voters stayed home in 2014, Dems lost the Senate & SCOTUS for a generation

Literally, it set up where we are now- Obama and Reid made a calculation to punt on even attempting to fix immigration until after 14 midterms- It backfired spectacularly, and led directly to Mitch’s reign of terror in the majority, and even worse Donnie’s Presidency.
