I wrote that column when it looked like Obama's losses with independent voters might finish him. The fact that he won re-election without them only confirmed his view that reaching beyond his base was unnecessary.

Ok but what we think is unacceptable often changes. Republicans live just fine with Obamacare now after it hurt them in an election.

Almost any moderate political idea can be exaggerated into something terrifying, especially when leaders do exactly that to whip up their base. Instead they could try to participate in legislation and moderate it.

I know both parties have shifted over time. GOP is pretty no way to any tax increase since 90s, but when the dem party's only real legislative tactic since clinton is to question opponents motives I wonder how consensus is possible or worth while

The problem is not political incentives but the media eco-systems (mostly, but not exclusively, on the right) -- Deals both sides can live with is only possible if both sides are willing to accept a common set of facts about the world, instead of "alternative facts"
