In other words, if Trump is impeached and then re-elected, the impeachment has zero effect on Trump's legitimacy & leaves the House looking like the GOP House did in 1999-2000, but worse. OTOH, a different calculus if you're a D & think impeachment helps you beat Trump in 2020.

That shouldn’t relieve Congress of its duties or responsibilities. Either they lay down a marker or they signal that there is no accountability.

Only 60% or so of voters- That’s the bigger issue. A lot of people will have an opinion on impeachment, and then still not get off theor butts to vote.

18 months is 40% of a term. By this logic, the people legitimize it for 18 months, have a 12 month window for impeachment, and then will have a chance to legitimize it in 18 months making it invalid again. This is an argument against the entire concept of impeachment.

Pursuing this to trial in the Senate would consume a third of that.
