I agree that there is a high moral cost to Trump, and doubly so among those people who have foolishly embraced him rather than just agreed to coexist with him. None of that, however, changes the fundamental orientation of each party on policy. None of it excuses the Democrats.https://twitter.com/HeathMayo/status/1125824271337558016 …

Too bad that support for Trump has rendered moot and utterly incredible most any type of claim to a higher political morality by fellow R’s. It was the price of routinely ignoring Trump’s misdeeds and embracing him with a cheer. Some didn’t pay it, most did. https://twitter.com/baseballcrank/status/1125763231782510597 …

But it *does* collapse any claim to be better than the Democrats, and it lends legitimacy (imo) to the argument that they now must supplant the Republicans until Trump is gone.

This assumes that there's no such thing as policy.

Start from the Constitution, save that, argue about policy another day.

As you know, no path to saving the Constitution can run through the Democrats. We get fresh, vivid evidence of this daily, as we have for decades.

I’ll never understand how a “moral” person can be a Republican. There is so much more to morality than fighting a women’s right to chose.

So every Democrat for decades has been an anti-constitutionalist. Great take. Now try breathing out of your nose for a little bit

I love love LOVE that you actually think you can come out of this with credibility intact. When someone is as corrupt, as downright dangerous as Trump, there’s no picking and choosing. You choose or the exigency of the moment chooses for you.

Please explain. The threat to the Constitution now is Trump. There was once hope that Congressional separation of powers, including help of some Republicans, would be sufficient to contain the threat, but as they've proven unwilling to do so, hope must now rest with Democrats.

Dan, like many, thinks the GOP can dust off Trump and continue as before -- as if most of its current leadership and media promoters haven't been discredited in the eyes of voters. Like 2018 didn't happen and even if you force him to admit it did, it's a black swan event.

The Republican Party *may* be able to save the Constitution one day IF they flush away Trumpism & disavow it. The Democratic Party, while not pro-Constitution, may be helpful in getting rid of Trump, which would be a huge step.

This is a cynically political claim. Republicans support plenty of legislation that curtails individual liberty, violates privacy and impedes quality of life. You just do it because “national security.” Demonstrable lie that GOP cares more about constitution than Dems.
