If you're more interested in raising taxes to meet spending than in the size of government, you may be many things, but #PrinciplesFirst is not one of themhttps://twitter.com/HeathMayo/status/1125409621412388865 …

One issue that #PrinciplesFirst discussed in ATL this weekend was ‘fiscal conservatism’ and how its meaning has drifted over time from ‘balanced budgets’ to ‘lower taxes’. Conservatives need to refocus on the whole picture & balance the full equation: taxes AND spending.

The point was that conservatives haven’t cut spending after reducing taxes — they’ve increased it.

I suspect Dan is deliberately misconstruing the point in order to pander to Trumplicans and paint #PrinciplesFirst as liberal. Hopefully I'm wrong.

I'm responding to a specific rhetorical trap that has consumed budget hawks for the past three decades. More to the point, balanced budgets are - like economic growth - a pragmatic end goal. Small government is actually a principle.

I can guarantee you the folks that gave two hours on a Saturday this weekend to talk about these things weren’t some unprincipled R’s who want to tax more to spend more. We’re reacting to the fact that current framing has put us even more in the hole.

And, yes, smaller government is a principle — but fiscal conservatism is a sort of variation on that principle. And the way R’s have been manifesting that principle seems not to be working in practice.

In any case, this is exactly the type of discussion we had this weekend—and it’s a better, more substantive one than anything that’s been going on of late. This at least feels productive. If you’re in DC or NYC this weekend, you should stop by and join us!
