Wow. And who knows? Maybe some did, maybe some didn't. Historians are still fighting over small numbers at the margins. But they are totally irrelevant to the larger story.

You know more about CW than I ever will, but weren't there slaves who went w/ their masters? They didn't fight, but present at battles "assisting" by prepping food, supplies, aiding wounded etc?

Yes but they were *slaves* and therefore, didn't have much of a choice in the matter.

Also, pretty much by definition wasn’t chattel slavery of the 16th-19th centuries an involuntary institution? I’m no historian, but I do remember that those who agreed to be slaves were not called slaves, they were called indentured servants. (And they were usually white too...)
