I hope you've all enjoyed this episode of "Esoteric Jeff live-tweets classic movies the rest of you saw decades ago." Sorry for that. The Bopper is croupy and coughy, I gotta do something to pass the time. I guess I should watch THE GODFATHER next.

In retrospect, the weirdest thing about THE BLUES BROTHERS, as a Chicagoan and a blues fan, is the lack of actual *Chicago* blues musicians in it. They got all the Stax/Volt & Atlantic superstars, but there's none of the Chess greats. Nobody from 2120 S. Michigan, which is odd.

You'd have thought they could've gotten Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, B.B. King, etc. for the film. Instead, it's (admittedly great) blues/R&B artists from a totally different region. Sort of strange. Wonder if there was some contractual issue involved.

Damn, that never occurred to me before. Buddy Guy would have killed in that movie.

I assume they got the people who knew the band, mostly, since they were the old Stax band. I know the studio wanted them to replace Aretha with someone more 'current' so the real old bluesmen were maybe a bit uncommercial.

Right. Shaffer said he told Belushi that he wasn’t interested in doing straight Blues, and pushed for more R&B materiel.

It is a one-take live album, recorded when the Blues Brothers opened for Steve Martin in LA in 1978. Hit #1 on Billboard. And it’s fun as hell.
