This is absolutely correct and great advice of not forcing biblical literalism as it's a double edged sword. As the next generation takes over leadership in religions, those who are gay will be accepted more and more because we know that's the way God made them.https://twitter.com/JamesMartinSJ/status/1121583660581445632 …

Being gay isn't a sin. It's the way that God made some people. And be careful about biblical literalism. E.g., should we stone people who work on the Sabbath (Ex. 35:2)? Also, be careful: the Bible says a lot about marriage. Solomon, Moses and Abraham all had multiple wives. https://twitter.com/Franklin_Graham/status/1121070184922525701 …

It is, however, not an accurate statement of what the Church that Fr. Martin belongs to teaches.

AFAIK Catholic doctrine does NOT (unlike some fundamentalists) deem "being gay" in terms of being attracted to the same sex is necessarily a sin, but that is different from *acting* on that attraction. A distinction Martin tends to blur though.

I think most churches have moved to the "being gay is OK if you don't act on it" type of doctrine. Which I personally think is the most abusive kind of teaching to tell people who are gay that you can be attracted to people, but never, ever actually try to pursue a life of love.

I'm not sure about that argument. The Catholic Church calls for celibacy of all priests, monks, nuns, divorced folks, hell, all unmarried people. So your idea that "tell[ing] people...never, ever actually try to pursue a life of love" seems one they're okay with.

Priests, monks, and nuns all get to make that choice to be priests, monks, and nuns full well knowing the rules. Unmarried people (who are straight) are able to pursue a life of love which includes sex which we all know is a part of love. That's the difference.

      Not within Catholic teaching.

Which part? That sex is a part of love or that priests/monks/nuns are making a choice to live in celibacy?

More people should read and understand Theology of the Body. Fr Martin rejects sound Catholic teaching as do many liberals in the Church.

what is sin? Doesn't the Bible present the idea that sin came into the world thru Adam and as a result being born into a sinful nature is inevitable. By the logic presented above, what sin could not be justified by identification of its being innate?
