That's one question. The other is the reasonability of people who believed the former at the time. There are many reasons why the Founding-era leaders were reasonable to be optimistic.

Obv. doubt Trump has delved into the Civil War scholarship. My guess it's more part of his fear of being seen as giving into political correctness, or criticizing some of his voters. The "both sides" equivocation -- even viewed in full context -- was rooted in similar impulse.
