More logical approach 4 years later to tie Trump to GOP. Voters in 2016 were more apt to separate Trump from downticket Rs. Hillary's problem was that she only took the strategy halfway, & didn't actually offer anything to voters who disliked Trump but were fine with normal Rs.https://twitter.com/HeerJeet/status/1121431000528109573 …

If Democrats in 2016 were serious about attracting the kinds of people who voted against Obama & Bill Clinton but didn't want Trump, Hillary was a uniquely poor messenger & she never gave those voters an olive branch of any kind.

I don’t think this is right. Hillary actually did quite well converting Romney voters — look at her improvement in affluent suburbs. The problem is she bled away so many Obama voters simultaneously.

The point - as with Trump replacing losses with new R voters - is your strategy needs enough of one to offset the other.

Right, I just wonder how much better one could have done converting R voters. I think it’s more likely another candidate would have done better retaining working class white Obama voters and/or boosting black turnout.

Wouldn't have worked in 2016, but she was the one 2020 candidate who could legit have cleared the field.
