More logical approach 4 years later to tie Trump to GOP. Voters in 2016 were more apt to separate Trump from downticket Rs. Hillary's problem was that she only took the strategy halfway, & didn't actually offer anything to voters who disliked Trump but were fine with normal Rs.https://twitter.com/HeerJeet/status/1121431000528109573 …

I don’t think this is right. Hillary actually did quite well converting Romney voters — look at her improvement in affluent suburbs. The problem is she bled away so many Obama voters simultaneously.
-
The point - as with Trump replacing losses with new R voters - is your strategy needs enough of one to offset the other.

What was the alternative? Bernie wasn’t winning over any R voters either.

She stated point blank she'd offer no concessions at all. https://twitter.com/BenjySarlin/status/763826292328390657 …

If Trump puts Haley on the ticket those voters go nowhere.

Dems didn’t do that in 2018 and won a solid House majority anyway. They aren’t going to sell out their own voters to pander to a tiny number of NeverTrump Republicans. They will mobilize base voters and non-voters instead.

What would an olive branch have looked like in the media environment where the years long press obsession was her email server from 2008? I mean honestly. Do you remember 2016?
-
Political pundits often focus so much on the most trivial things. Nothing mattered in 2016 except for the press’s deranged coverage which dampened Hillary turnout in three states enough that she was overcome by old white people motivated by racism.
