High paid sports coaches, at least, tend to run programs that are net revenue raisers for their schools.https://twitter.com/stuartpstevens/status/1120903933923184642 …

The highest paid public employee in 39 states is a football or basketball coach. Nick Saban is highest paid public employee in America & as an @OleMissFB fan, thus troubles me on so many levels. https://twitter.com/GusSeattle/status/1120900762500915200 …

Argue, if you will, that major college sports are a scandal in other ways, or that some coaches aren't worth big bucks. But big time sports isn't raising anybody's tuition.

coaches salaries are from athletic dept revenues. not linked to tuition/student fees at all.

Government subsidies in the form of loans are raising tuition.

Correct. Like all subsidies, loan subsidies and grants work by increasing the willingness and ability of the consumer to pay a higher price. In exchange, more college seats are available - maybe at a higher quality.

Only about 15-20 of the biggest programs are revenue neutral. For most Division I athletic programs there is some subsidy from the general budget into the athletics auxiliary budget. And there's also a ton of off-budget expenses (e.g., free land used for stadia)

Sports is the arts. It's not culturally anointed as such, but the distinction is arbitrary. People should be ecstatic that at least one branch of the arts is flourishing.

Making student loans non-defaultable blood oaths available to anyone w a pulse raises tuition. The NCAA's shameless exploitation of amatuer athletes is an entirely different issue.
