Argue, if you will, that major college sports are a scandal in other ways, or that some coaches aren't worth big bucks. But big time sports isn't raising anybody's tuition.

Also, instate tuition at U Alabama is about 10,500 a year. Have to figure an enormous revenue generating machine like Saban helps keep that even keel.

Saban has been a huge financial gain for UA. No question.

It’s not top coaches in revenue producing sports that are the problem. It’s random rowing or fencing coaches that make a quarter of a million a year that seem like more of an issue to me.

The very top football programs are revenue raisers but my understanding is a lot of universities have big, expensive, money-losing football programs in hopes (usually unfounded) they’ll someday have a top money-making one.

Partly because of the free labor. Not that top coaches wouldn’t still be valuable but I think there’d be some serious redistribution toward athletes.

Simply not true. It’s a pyramid scheme where schools pay coaches (also expensive stadiums, special trainers, etc.) more and more hoping to be one of the perhaps 25% that are profitable. The losses get hidden in PE slush funds, but these are mostly losers.
