This, I disagree with. The fact that Trump won is fairly strong proof that any Republican could have won. The complicating factor is that someone like Cruz or Rubio would probably have won some votes in Western Pennsylvania among voters who abandoned Toomey specifically over the gun issue (and vice versa in the Philly burbs).

Also the Dem baseline was collapsing in some of the rurals/rust belt towns in western PA prior to trump- even as Corbett was losing in 2014 -PA Rs were making major gains in downballot offices there.

As we discussed on another thread, you can go to Johnstown, the heart of Jack Murtha's district, and find nothing but Trump supporters. This is why I formed my opinion that Trump tapped trade/labor voters. Still figuring how to explain Toomey.
