Candidates matter in the general election. But voters matter more. The voter dynamics in 2016 favored a Republican victory no matter who was the nominee.https://thefederalist.com/2014/09/04/history-is-not-on-the-democrats-side-in-2016/ …

I disagree. I’m not fan of Trump, but he tapped into a frustrated group of Americans who felt they were “unheard” and “forgotten.” Kasich would have lost them at the GOP convention, and was the one GOP candidate (aside from Trump) that I personally would never vote for.

That said, I didn’t think Trump would be the nominee, nor win the election, so what do I know?

I was a Cruz voter who didn't vote for Trump. But I think I would have been even happier to NOT vote for Kasich given his role as a spoiler in that campaign.

Would “any Republican” have gotten the votes where it counted, or would they just have lost California and New York by less than Trump?

Agree it would have been a different coalition. I think Kasich would have gotten more of the blue collar vote given his background and just the fact of Ohio. I think he also might have kept more of the upper middle class college vote that has been hemorrhaging to the Democrats

Hillary would have crushed Kasich

I don't know, Crank. Tell me which candidate would have delivered Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania?

Lose some white working class votes, gain suburban votes.
