We're not talking about primary but secondary boycotts: efforts to strip media orgs of their sponsors in order to put them out of business or at least influence their coverage.

Maybe we should force people to buy advertising and purchase the products advertised to level the playing field.

Of course boycotting is legal, but is it ethically right using it to shut down anyone who disagrees with you. Of course not.

The truth is, you’re both right. Boycotting is speech, but it’s negative speech. It should be supported by a well articulated argument. Sadly, it usually isn’t, and is used instead of rhetoric. This is wrong, and corrosive to free speech.

Which boycotts were not accompanied by an argument?

The problem is with your question, it lacks any nuance. It’s not so simple as “more speakers=good and less speakers=bad,” it’s about the quality of the speakers. If speakers are using their platform for misinformation and hate, why should we support them economically?
-
It's actually not really about the quality of the speakers either. It's totally fine to use economic pressure to tell media companies what you think they're doing is wrong. Boycotting is speech.

I reject the premise of your question. It doesn’t reduce the number of speakers in the marketplace. And I’m done with your dishonesty and bad faith in this argument, as perfectly embodies in that tweet. Your hackery.
-
Refusing to follow the logic of your own argument, then tossing an ad hominem & running away, is truly a sign of a strong argument grounded in a well-considered philosophy of speech. I really expected better.

Either blacklisting Dalton Trumbo and getting Brendan Eichs fired were both fair implementations of public pressure, or neither.
