We hear all these platitudes out there about free speech and press values, but so many of the people mouthing them are simultaneously trying to winnow the speech/media landscape rather than win the marketplace of ideas.

Free speech is more than just the First Amendment's limitations on government censorship. If it dies as a social value, the formal legal structure will be of little use.

"Defend the free press" is *by definition* defense from government interference.

"Free press" means something particular; it's a term of art at this point. If you want to say a press that is free in other ways, you have to come up with a new and different term.

When the NBA decided it didn't want me as a customer I stopped watching. Same with Levi Strauss, K-Mart, ESPN and NFL. I just stopped being or cut back on being their customer.
