We've had assassination attempts on candidates - Teddy Roosevelt shot in the chest in October 1912, FDR shot at as POTUS-elect in 1933, RFK killed & George Wallace paralyzed while running for nominations.

That is a fun book. Interesting sidelights on the life of congressional staffers, and the main character represents a valiant attempt on Greenfield's part to think his way into the mind of a middle-aged woman who identifies as a movement conservative.

I mean, post convention presumably the VP nominee would be slotted in without too much logistical difficulty. Where it would get sticky is if a nominee had a major health event- significant stroke or major MI of the sort mid-general but survived.
