given the focus of Abrams’ campaign—voting rights and Medicaid expansion—it is unclear what “identity politics” means in this formulation other than “campaigning while black”https://twitter.com/HotlineJosh/status/1116395654903943171 …

The question is what does Hotline Josh think identity politics means. Even a reactionary baseball should be able to see that.

Words mean things no matter who uses them. There are different types of identity politics; the most direct is "vote for me bc of my race/gender/religion/sexuality etc" Ds do this a lot more than Rs, *esp* within their own primaries.

What is identity politics and how does it differ from "regular" politics? Please, don't answer this with "there's no difference" unless you are baseballcrank or hotlinejosh.

A textbook definition of "identity politics" would be, say, "I want this politician to succeed because he is the same race as me and not because of him personally." A person who would say that is engaged in identity politics.
