2. The place was a hotel. Like, a fairly large hotel. 2/3 of the building was condemned. We were literally told it was unsafe to enter. This being the 1970s, this did not deter my dad from renting it because hey, $50.

3. This was basically The Shining, but it had no telephone, and for a NYPD lieutenant in July 1977, it was a positive to be in a remote location where it was hard to get called back no matter what fresh hell broke loose.

4. We called the place "Old Mildew" because that's what the whole building smelled of. There was a shuffleboard court out back but it had been reclaimed by nature. Whole place was heated by a pot-bellied wood-burning stove.

5. When you flushed the toilet, water ran across the room and down a hole in the floor. BUT: I was 5, & this was basically the only 2 weeks until I was in law school that I had my own room, so I was GOLD. As you can see, Curious George was equally thrilled.pic.twitter.com/J686afMpy4

6. It was a great vacation and we had many laughs for years at that house. I have no idea if anybody else ever rented it and made it out in one piece.
