Not apropos, but I find it fascinating how the germanic peoples managed to esconce their names as Proper Royal Names even where their language didn't take hold. It tells you a lot about how things went in the later Roman empire.

…Louis, Richard, Charles, William, Henry... even in Romance lands like France and Spain, you have to look pretty hard to find a king whose name *isn't* from a Germanic language. (A few Philips around, I guess.)
