Did you pay AMT last year? If so, make sure you refigure your 2017 taxes to see if your refund is really taxable. If you used TurboTax this year and last year you can do the calcs in about 5 minutes.

It’s complicated, but If you didn’t benefit from the excess state tax payment in 2017 you don’t owe taxes on the refund in 2@18.

Technically you’re being taxed on last year’s deduction, which you fully took. Next year the state tax refund, if any, won’t be fully taxable... but the tax changes are definitely not fun...
