This simply is historically false. It totally distorts what moderate has meant. As a former moderate Republican congressman told me in response to this claim, “John McCain was no more a moderate than I am a socialist.”https://twitter.com/baseballcrank/status/1108917289737424898 …

McCain had more issues he was consistently conservative on than Romney did - and more he was consistently not-conservative. Both were moderate Republicans. https://twitter.com/NeverTr74704466/status/1108916880675344385 …

If you're talking about the 1960s, when "conservative" meant Ford & Dole, OK. By post-Reagan standards, McCain was a moderate.

In his first Congress in the Senate, Reagan’s last two years in office, he was the 30th most moderate Republican out of 44th. If you want to say moderates disappeared by the 2010s, fine. But he was not an ideological moderate. He was a maverick.

If by maverick you mean he was a moderate on a bunch of issues and conservative on some others, yes. He was a hardliner on national defense. He was for free trade, open immigration, nuclear power, lots of regulation, cutting pork but not big spending programs, skeptic of tax cuts

Right, but he was a skeptic of tax cuts because he liked balancing the budget. He was a Dole/HW Bush conservative in that regard. But the way I define it is: he was conservative on most issues. And departed from orthodoxy on climate change, immigration, campaign finance & a few

Literally no living conservative thinks Bob Dole was a conservative.

Conservatives today don’t get to rewrite history. They can cheer that they took the party over and lurched it far to the right to the point that even Barry Goldwater wouldn’t qualify by today’s standards. But they can’t take historical figures & judge them by 2019 standards

The funny thing is that a lot of it was tactical, not ideological. Outside of food stamps, on domestic programs, Dole was a down the line conservative. But he believed in compromise and governance.
