I’m not surprised to see this—and I’m definitely not surprised to see the author—but it’s still disappointing.https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/iraq-war-just-cause-saddam-hussein-threat-stability/ …

French justifies the Iraq War by reiterating all the reasons why Hussein was bad. I’m not sure many disagree, but his points are straight from 2003, and remind me precisely of the pre-Libya War catalogue of Qaddafi horribles.

Except that Qaddafi was no longer an active enemy of the US by 2011, thanks to our actions against Saddam. Also we were not actively, perpetually enforcing a cease-fire that Qaddafi was actively violating. Also Qaddafi did not openly celebrate the 9/11 attacks. For a few.

The Palestinians openly celebrated the 9/11 attacks, too. Perpetually enforcing the Gulf War cease-fire still doesn’t mean the resulting war was worthwhile. I’m not sure how you can say it was, given how it worked out.

Even the Palestinian *leadership* squelched those demonstrations pretty swiftly. They knew it was bad news. Saddam pushed it through his state-run media. To support leaving Saddam in place, you have to own either the forever enforcement of the status quo or US humiliation.

With the benefit of hindsight, I’m definitely not buying that as a worthwhile rationale for everything the war cost us. At the time, I probably would have, but I was young.

Naturally, I took it rather personally when his regime's official organs celebrated people trying to murder me, but it goes well beyond that. He was running a safe haven for a literal murderer's row of notorious anti-US, anti-Israel terrorists. Libya was different.
