Jefferson and Monroe were governors, and I don’t know that the country would have been worse off without Adams,Taft, Hoover or Trump but I think you miss the point of a heuristic. The question is “what is sufficient background to qualify someone for POTUS”?

Most experience standards require a "yes, but Lincoln." Most every decent POTUS won statewide office, led a majority legislative caucus, and/or was a commanding general. http://baseballcrank.com/archives2/2008/05/politics_yes_ex.php …

Adams was a giant too. Give the man his due.

I’m talking President Adams, for which I have two words: Alien and Sedition

Any hope of an Adam's presidency being redeemed by his judicial picks was destroyed when John Marshall refused to recuse himself in Marbury vs Madison.

Fun fact: Jefferson actually defaulted in Marbury. He was so disgusted by the mere suggestion that he refused to send a lawyer to argue it.

American can sigh a breath of relief that the long national nightmare that was the Jefferson Presidency is behind us.

Jefferson was a giant as well. A contradiction in so many ways, he nonetheless recognized seminal moments when they presented themselves. I.e., the Louisiana purchase was arguably unconstitutional and contrary to his beliefs. But it was too good of a deal and he know it.

That’s all in well, but I will refute all the accomplishments of the Jefferson Presidency with three words: The Embargo Act.

Louisiana Purchase did more long term good than the damage done by the idiotic Embargo Act.

Louisiana Purchase was such an insane deal that popped out of nowhere that any moron would have taken it. Even so, Jefferson considered not taking it.

I mean Jefferson literally came up with every objection as to why we shouldn’t do the Louisiana Purchase. Never has so much praised been heaped on man for only reluctantly doing something that the whole universe has declared a “no brainer.”
