I am conflicted on this, but lean no. On the one hand, there is no inherent reason a congressman or mayor or “some dude” can’t be a good president. On the other hand (and I think this is where I ultimately come down)...https://twitter.com/conorsen/status/1104923642671054849 …

The norm that someone should have to be a statewide elected to run for POTUS is dumb and discriminatory, and it’s good that it’s going away.

The presidency isn’t an entry level job, and many of the problems from this administration and frankly the last one stem from this. It’s an imperfect heuristic, just as a refusal to make a regional office manager CEO would be, but I think it is a decent one.

So this removes Taft, Hoover, Ike, HW Bush, and Trump from the mix. And, leaving the founding generation out, at least Lincoln, Polk, and Grant (not including VPs who succeeded thru death).

Jefferson and Monroe were governors, and I don’t know that the country would have been worse off without Adams,Taft, Hoover or Trump but I think you miss the point of a heuristic. The question is “what is sufficient background to qualify someone for POTUS”?

Most experience standards require a "yes, but Lincoln." Most every decent POTUS won statewide office, led a majority legislative caucus, and/or was a commanding general. http://baseballcrank.com/archives2/2008/05/politics_yes_ex.php …

I’m talking President Adams, for which I have two words: Alien and Sedition

And but for JA, Hamilton tries to become an American Napoleon. His presidency was critical. And most importantly, Adams let office peacefully after losing the election. It was perhaps his most indispensable act - proving the peaceful transfer of power would work. /2

In all seriousness, I give Adams a lot of credit for keeping us out of war.
