In 1973, the AL ERA was 3.82 (FIP 3.81). Catfish Hunter, pitching in arguably the best pitcher's park in the league, had a FIP of 4.40: 39 HR, 69 BB, just 124 K in 2.56.1 IP. Catfish went 21-5, 3.33 ERA & finished 3d in the Cy Young voting.

I was a bit too young to remember Catfish well(born in '72) but the old man said he was straight up one of the best big game pitchers he ever saw.

Difference between Palmer and Catfish in ERA is .19 and FIP is .22. Doesn't that say Palmer got more help?

Yes, they are ranked by IP.
