Those assumptions are based on the idea that we’re not currently going through a massive political convulsion, where Americans no longer share even the most basic vision of justice or the Good. We can have that discussion in the abstract, thinking nothing has changed, or not.
You can't fight a battle of values unarmed. Trump degrades so many of the things we said we were about. If our movement is just about raw power, well, why not join the Left then? They do that better.

Donald Trump is sui generis. Whatever he is, whatever he does or fails to do may reflect on the GOP, but the effects will not continue long because there is no Trump 2.0. Despite the fact that he has a brand that could win the presidency, there is no movement to copy or match him
The argument that Nixon destroyed the R party is overblown. Ford finished Nixon's term, we had a one term Dem, and then 3 terms of Republicans.
People knew what Trump's character was and voted for him anyway. It's not like we just found out this morning he's a boorish, loudmouthed, twice-divorced New Yorker with a habit of stretching the truth.
