Here’s where the Left is today—and here’s what David French is writing about. At its best, it’s uselessly shouting “serenity now!” to keep Orange Man Bad away.pic.twitter.com/wyWNUEykpn

C'mon Dave, we can walk and chew gum at the same time. You're really gonna complain that he hasn't written about AOC since...yesterday? https://www.nationalreview.com/2019/03/alexandria-ocasio-cortezs-monumental-hypocrisy/ …

The point isn’t that he hasn’t mentioned AOC by name. I think that the obsession with the kind of column he wrote—and it’s at least weekly from somebody since 2016—reveals how little he seems to understand about where the real threat is coming from.

There is always more than one threat. The corrosive effect of Trump's character - and of the need to present vice as virtue - remains a serious threat to destroy the Right.

I disagree. I don’t think Trump’s character is anything that could be reasonably described as a “threat.” This isn’t a new development, but it’s clear that if we no longer see the same threats and have the same policy priorities, in what way are we in a real coalition?

Serious question: did Nixon leave the GOP better off than he found it? Do scandals ever matter? Do lies ever matter? Do movements ever turn people away they might attract? Do we care if the things we say are opposite of the things we said yesterday?

Those assumptions are based on the idea that we’re not currently going through a massive political convulsion, where Americans no longer share even the most basic vision of justice or the Good. We can have that discussion in the abstract, thinking nothing has changed, or not.

You can't fight a battle of values unarmed. Trump degrades so many of the things we said we were about. If our movement is just about raw power, well, why not join the Left then? They do that better.

Donald Trump is sui generis. Whatever he is, whatever he does or fails to do may reflect on the GOP, but the effects will not continue long because there is no Trump 2.0. Despite the fact that he has a brand that could win the presidency, there is no movement to copy or match him

The argument that Nixon destroyed the R party is overblown. Ford finished Nixon's term, we had a one term Dem, and then 3 terms of Republicans.

People knew what Trump's character was and voted for him anyway. It's not like we just found out this morning he's a boorish, loudmouthed, twice-divorced New Yorker with a habit of stretching the truth.
