I'm gonna get corny and sappy for a few.

When the Trebek version of Jeopardy! launched I was 10 or 11 and was getting super into trivia and odd facts and things. My mom loved the old version (I only knew about it because of the Weird Al song) and told me I'd love the show. So we watched it together from launch.

Life happens so we didn't watch it every night together, but between 1984 and when I went away to college in 1991, I will say that we watched something like 80% of all episodes of it together. It was just an automatic "it's 7:30, Jeopardy time."

I've always gotten along really well with my mom but competing against each other to see who could get the Jeopardy clues first -- and trying to guess the killer on "Murder she wrote," another Craig-mom appointment show, was a point of bonding I didn't appreciate until later.

Of course, there was . . . controversy for a time. For a year or two, Jeopardy came on at 4pm for some damn reason on one channel, and then the traditional 7:30 on the channel my mom and I watched. Same episodes airing on the same day. I figured it out. She didn't.

The first day I had all the responses ahead of time she was sort of amazed. Of course I overplayed my hand -- I was 13 or something -- and by day 2 she knew I was cheating. She still tells people that story as an example of how I was a shithead.

I stopped watching Jeopardy regularly after I went to college. I'd watch it at home for holidays and things, but that was mostly it. To this day she watches it religiously. My dad does too, but he does it mostly because she does. Not his thing.

Celebrity health and death and personal lives aren't a thing any of us care too much about in our family -- there aren't many fanboys in our crowd -- but I'm legit worried about how my mom will take this. Tried to call her a bit ago and she wasn't around.

I'm not doing great with this one myself, frankly. Less so for Trebek than for memories of bonding with my mom over that show. Kinda wrecking me.
