@cheald @_de @bcrypt good security is like air… you shouldn’t notice it until something goes wrong

@bascule @_de @bcrypt I agree in principle, but the practical implication of that is usually just delegating the hard parts, ie PKI.

@cheald @_de @bcrypt SKS is broken. We need better key directories. I don’t think Keybase is the right answer though

@bascule @_de @bcrypt I'm curious what you don't like about it. It's the first keydir I've used and actually not hated the experience of.

@cheald @_de @bcrypt it’s centralized. It uses proprietary protocols. It requires you launch a Terminal and install Node.js

@cheald @_de @bcrypt I would prefer a decentralized solution based on open standards that actually helps Johnny encrypt. Keybase isn’t that

@bascule @_de @bcrypt That's fair. Keybase operates wholly in-browser as far as I can tell, though. Decentralization is an issue though.

@bascule @_de @bcrypt That is, I set up all my stuff last night in-browser (except privkey, but they can gen one for you). It seemed decent.

@bascule @_de @bcrypt Heh, I agree, just pointing out they offer it for Johnny. Installing software to use a website is friction for most.

@cheald @_de @bcrypt it’s easy for Johnny to encrypt with snake oil that sacrifices all security properties

@bascule @_de @bcrypt Anyhow, revoked the uploaded key I gen'd last night & redid with gpg+curl. No node, but GPG is still ugly to use.

@bascule @_de @bcrypt AFAICT, the key is encrypted on-client, so you have to trust the client lib sec, yeah? Isn't that true of any client?

@cheald @bascule yes, you're trusting the library; but it's stored unencrypted on their end until you delete it. And after that, is it gone?

@_de @bascule My understanding is that the key is only decrypted on client & stored encrypted on server. Maybe I'm wrong in the assumption!
