@bascule Redis is great if used for ephemeral, off-heap/process storage. It also has a super low barrier of entry which is crucial.

@abhay it’s in the uncanny valley between Memcached and a SQL database or more advanced distributed k/v database -

@KirinDave@fujin_@bascule@abhay This tweet is OK once there is a drop in replacement for Redis. Let us all just shut up till then#Redis -
@imoracle@KirinDave@fujin_@abhay nobody should be using Redis for a distributed lock server -
@bascule@fujin_@abhay Notice thread points at SETNX (@KirinDave). Indeed, setnx can be that cotton candy which eventually rot kid's teeth.

@bascule Redis is not a distributed system. It's a centralized shared heap for uniform local processing. -
@rootlabs "Redis is not a distributed system" unless you use Redis replication, failover, sentinel, or cluster... -
@bascule Yep, I don't use those. -
@rootlabs I haven't been the one picking the features for years, I just get to be Captain Hindsight in the aftermath after everything breaks

@bascule I like Redis, actually. I just don't think an ad hoc approach to replication and FT does it any good. -
@seancribbs there are things Redis is good at, and there are things that the majority of people use Redis to do… IMO

@bascule Redis is not a msg queue (backpressure: run out of RAM) or distributed system (ordered events, master election, availability) - End of conversation

@bascule Redis is a shared heap substitute because Python/Ruby threads suck. If you limit it to this, it's not so bad. -
@rootlabs the perpetual "Redis doesn't suck, you're just using it wrong!" argument, predicated on picking a subset of non-shitty features -
@bascule I agree that subset is rather small, hence why I rarely use it.
